College Scholarships
College Scholarship Search InfoSearching for college scholarships can be easy or difficult depending on the type of scholarship one is seeking.
It is typical for persons to find scholarships in their home region. Information on these can be found by asking local persons and organizations. Typically, these are more easy to gain as the eligible population is smaller.
One of the easiest ways for high school students wanting to enter college to find information on scholarships is to ask their high school Guidance Counselor. This is one of their job duties and they can be a wonderful source of information.
In addition, many non-profit organizations offer scholarships for prospective students. Below is a list of possible organizations to contact:
Community Foundations - Many counties / cities / regions have a local foundation dedicated to giving money in the form of grants and scholarships to people and organizations in the area.
Labor Unions - All the major labor unions offer scholarships for members and their dependent children. Make sure you consult with your parents to find out if they are members of a labor union.
Churches - Individual local churches may offer scholarships, but more likely you will need to contact the Diocese or church headquarters. Of course, scholarships offered by the church may or may not be limited to the study of theology.
Chamber of Commerce - Many chambers of commerce offer grants to students, especially those planning on careers in Business and Public Service. Even if they do not offer any directly through the Chamber, you can usually get a listing of members, and many of them may offer small scholarships to local students. These scholarships are generally small one-time monetary awards.
Well-established schools and universities may have funds for highly accomplished students. However, to be eligible for them, the student must usually belong to some special category or be among the nation's best. However, universities are wonderful sources of general information on scholarships, grants, and even internship opportunities.
PSAT/NMSQT - In the United States, students are offered the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT test, usually in their Junior year in high school. Not only does it help them to prepare for the SAT later on, but National Merit Scholarship programs are determined, in the first step, by the scores received on the PSAT/NMSQT test. Some private scholarship programs require the applicants to take the PSAT.
Another way to locate and obtain scholarships is to look for them based on your career goals. Many scholarships are available to those pursuing specific areas of study such as Nursing school, Law school, Medical and Veterinary Medical school. Check with the University for these specific types of scholarships.
And, of course in this day and age the internet is a wondeful tool for searching for and finding available scholarships.
